ST. MARY’S CHURCH, CAREW - KITCHENETTE PROJECT

STATEMENT OF NEED

As part of a major Heritage Lottery Grant project in 2017, to replace the church tower parapet gutters and the installation of under-pew heating, a refreshment area was created in the South Aisle. This was done by the removal of six pews.

The Parochial Church Council now wishes to continue with the refreshment area project with the provision of a small kitchenette facility in this area which it considers will be of great benefit to current and future worshippers and also to those attending concerts and other fundraising events in church. St Mary’s is one of the largest church buildings in the area and is often used for special services in the Ministry Area and Deanery. A kitchenette facility in the church would make it much easier and safer to provide refreshments after such occasions. St Mary’s is a Grade 1 listed building and is very popular with visitors, especially in the summer months.

Currently refreshment facilities have to be brought in to the church from another nearby building which is not disabled access friendly. Doing so creates much work and many health and safety issues for members, such as the arrangements for boiling water and its disposal.

It is considered that the provision of these facilities will make it much easier and safer to provide refreshments in church and enable the building to be more welcoming and user friendly which will be of benefit to church users and the wider community. It will also assist the Parochial Church Council to comply with the provisions of the disabled access legislation.

UPDATE MARCH 2019
